CHAPTER 13

Frances walked as quickly as she could along the dark streets of London ignoring the sounds around her. She could hear Sinclair calling out from somewhere behind her, but she wasn’t about to stop. That humiliation she could do without.

Tears streamed down her pale cheeks. Why had she tried to be something she was not? She was content in her little house, wasn’t she? Things hadn’t been that terrible, had they?

It wasn’t until he came along and had shown her that there could be more, that she had realized how much she had been missing.

Her heart couldn’t go back. Sinclair had taken it with him.

Frances rubbed her arms, realizing that her wrap was at the theater still in the Moberly box. She looked around her. The street was not familiar. She was nowhere near the theater or anywhere she knew.

A real feeling of terror began to sink into her heart. Just what had she done.

“Where are you heading, love?” A foul man called out to her from the shadows.

Frances didn’t answer she just continued to walk, faster now, heart beating erratically.

Before too long, she heard a rustle behind her. Not turning around, she continued along the same path. Terror in every footstep, when she heard the distinct sound of someone following her, Frances began to run.

In her haste, she missed a crack in the cobblestones, tripping she went sprawling on the filthy street.

“You shouldn’t be out here alone, love,” the nasty man was on her in an instant. His hand was brutally gripping her neck against the mud. “Now, you will pay the price.”

“Boggs, what did you find?” another man spoke from further away.

“Nothin’ Jasper, just a whore,” Boggs yelled back.

Jasper? Could it be possible?

“H-h-help!” Frances screamed, “J-J-Jasper, help!”

Boggs tried to muffle, Frances’ screams, but Jasper was on them in a trice.

“This is not a whore, Boggs, what game are you playing?” Jasper had Boggs by the neck.

Frances gingerly got up, “I d-d-don’t think h-h-he can answer.”

Jasper looked down at the shy woman who had never spoken two words to him in the past. “Why do you say that poppet?”

Frances' eyes began to roll back, “He’s d-d-dead.”

And she fainted dead away.

“Are you feeling better Miss Abbott?” Tommy asked.

Frances looked at Jasper’s son. He was the spitting image of his father, only a pint-sized pre-teen version. “Y-y-yes, t-t-thanks to Jasper.”

Tommy grinned, his green eyes flashing, “My pa is the best, he can do anything.”

Jasper smiled, “At your service, Miss Abbott. I am thankful I found you. Although keeping an eye on you here in London is not my only responsibility here for the Rotherford’s it is high on the list. Would you mind telling me why you left the theater? The man I had trailing you was fit to be tied when you didn’t return after intermission.”

Frances sighed, “So, it was n-n-not coincidence that I r-r-ran into you.”

Jasper raised a brow, “It was entirely coincidental. However, I do have a team watching over you. A team that I will now personally supervise until I can determine what’s going on.
